A Simple Way to Get the Most from Your Hours

Time is a precious commodity — we all get only so many hours — but this time of year especially, time seems even scarcer than usual.

Perhaps that’s why so many of us are thinking about using our time wisely when New Year’s resolutions come around.

I’d like to help you stop saying, “I just don’t have time,” and instead begin believing you have an abundance of time every day. It’s a simple, two-step process that will make time your ally, not an opponent.

Budgeting Time and Money

think and grow richIf you are familiar with Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich and Law of Success, you might remember the 17 Principles of Success. Dr. Hill named one principle “Budgeting Time and Money,” combining the two because, if you think about it, both are easily squandered and can only be spent once.

Most people believe they can always earn more money, but they can’t get more time.

Let me show you why they’re dead wrong!

Two Steps to Abundance

First, you need to realize how much time you have every day. Using the Rule of Eights, you have three parts to every day: eight hours of rest, eight hours of work, and eight hours of personal time.

When was the last time you thought carefully about your personal eight hours?

Second, you need to start planning your day not just around your work life, but also your personal life.

Do you realize the abundance of time you really have? Can you picture yourself using those hours you just found?

The Right Tool for the Job

Like you, I spent most of my adult life thinking I was too busy and overwhelmed, that there weren’t enough hours in the day. But a few years ago I decided to try something different: taking Napoleon Hill’s words to heart, I began accounting for all my time when I wasn’t sleeping. Then I took the next step and began planning my day not just around my work schedule, but before and after.

With a little refinement, I created a tool that has helped people around the world start budgeting their time. It’s called The Better Dayplanner.

With my dayplanner, you’ll have the right tool for making the most of your time:

  • Start as early as 5:00 AM and go til 9:00 PM
  • Begin the week on Monday, so Saturday and Sunday are adjacent for easier weekend planning and shifting
  • Plan your goals for the month, then follow up with a review of what went wrong and right

As you practice using your Better Dayplanner, you’ll find out how simple it can be to find the time for just about anything. You’ll also discover how efficient you are at what you’re already doing, because you’ve put a start and end time in place. You won’t want to waste any time because you’re in control of your schedule, and you already have plans for yourself.

What’s Inside the Better Dayplanner?

I designed the Better Dayplanner to fit my long days – 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM – with ample space for notes. I included a page for planning the month and another at the end for marking achievements, follow-ups, and other notes. (That page is graph paper because I sometimes like to sketch things to scale. And I think it looks cool too.)

I start the work week at Monday, which puts the weekend days together on the right side of the planner. Let’s face it, we often plan something for “sometime over the weekend,” and those Saturdays and Sundays can blur together. With the Better Dayplanner laid out this way, I can plan my weekends more loosely and keep the Monday through Friday week more focused.

I listed the major holidays but skipped the cute features like moon phase and birthstones.

But I did use some space for inspiration … the kind that is meaningful to success-minded people. Each week has a quote from an entrepreneur or other legendary success story. We can always use some motivation, and I’ve tried to choose many quotes with a sense of humor to lighten things up on bad days.

Plenty of Space for All Your Planning

In the very first week you use your Better Dayplanner, you’ll see why it’s so much easier to use.

For one thing, I used a full 8-1/2 by 11 inch, letter-sized layout, so you can actually write at a reasonable size. There is room for everything you do before, during, and after the “normal” workday. There is space for notes, but not page after page of blanks. I also spiral-bound the book so it will easily lay flat – and also can’t lose pages like a three-ring binder could.

With an understated, brown cover* and minimal text, you won’t feel like your planner stands out and draws attention, but you also won’t feel self-conscious that’s it’s not a super-premium leatherbound planner carried more for show than actual work.
